Ellijay Apple Season 2026: 10 Things to Know Before You Hit the Orchard (And How to Get There Stress-Free)
Apple season is in full swing in Ellijay, GA! From U-pick days at Hillcrest and BJ Reece Orchards to the Georgia Apple Festival (Oct 10–11 & 17–18 at the Lions Club Fairgrounds), this guide covers the 10 things you need to know before you go — including the parade date, parking realities, and Highway 52 traffic. With rideshare unreliable in the mountains and cell service spotty in orchard country, a pre-booked ride from Northern Star Taxi LLC takes the stress out of the day. Enjoy the apples, cider, and fall fun — and let a local driver handle the parking and the mountain roads.
A little planning can make the day much easier.
Here are 10 things to know before you go, plus a simple way to avoid crowded parking lots, unreliable rideshare apps, and last-minute transportation headaches.
1. U-pick apple season is already open
You don’t have to wait until October to pick apples.
Hillcrest Orchards started its 2026 U-pick season on September 1. The orchard is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through October.
BJ Reece Orchards opened U-pick in late August and is also open daily through October.
That means you can plan a quieter orchard visit before the big festival weekends. Early September is often a good time for families, visitors staying in cabins, and locals who want to avoid the biggest crowds.
Orchard activities and apple varieties can change as the season moves along, so check directly with the orchard before heading out.

2. The Georgia Apple Festival runs for two weekends
The 2026 Georgia Apple Festival takes place on:
October 10–11, 2026
October 17–18, 2026
The festival is held at the Ellijay Lions Club Fairgrounds, located at 1729 South Main Street, Ellijay, GA 30540.
Festival hours are:
Saturdays: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Sundays: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Admission is $10 per person, and children under 12 are free.
You’ll find handmade crafts, food vendors, live music, local apples, demonstrations, and plenty of fall treats. The festival is a big event with a friendly small-town feel, but it still draws huge crowds.
3. The parade is downtown, not at the fairgrounds
The Georgia Apple Festival parade is scheduled for Saturday, October 10, at 10 a.m. in downtown Ellijay.
That matters when planning your route.
The parade and the main festival are in different locations. If you want to watch the parade and then visit the fairgrounds, give yourself extra time between stops. Downtown traffic can slow down quickly that morning.
If you’re staying in a cabin outside town, this is a good day to arrange transportation ahead of time rather than trying to find a ride after the parade ends.
4. Parking fills up fast on festival weekends
Festival parking can become difficult early in the day. The lots around the fairgrounds fill up, and traffic builds as visitors arrive from Atlanta, Chattanooga, Blue Ridge, Blairsville, Jasper, and other nearby communities.
The festival uses park-and-shuttle arrangements from some parking areas. You can find current details on the official Georgia Apple Festival website.
Still, many visitors prefer to avoid the parking search altogether.
A pre-booked local ride lets you focus on the festival instead of circling full lots, carrying bags across a large parking area, or trying to remember where you left the car.

5. Highway 52 is the main orchard route
Many popular orchards are along Highway 52 East, including Hillcrest Orchards and BJ Reece Orchards.
That road can get busy during peak fall weekends. Expect more traffic, slower turns, and extra time between orchards if you’re trying to visit more than one.
If you’re planning a full orchard day, decide which locations you want to visit before leaving your cabin or hotel. It also helps to schedule your pickup for a specific time instead of waiting until everyone is tired and ready to go.
Northern Star Taxi provides local trips throughout Ellijay, including rides for errands, meals, orchard visits, and other local stops.
6. Rideshare apps may not be dependable in the mountains
Uber and Lyft can be hit or miss in the North Georgia mountains.
You may find a driver in town, but that doesn’t always mean one is available at an orchard, cabin, winery, or rural road several miles away. Cell service can also be inconsistent in orchard country.
That’s why a local, pre-booked Ellijay taxi can be a better option for fall travel.
Northern Star Taxi LLC is locally based and familiar with the roads around Ellijay, Blue Ridge, Blairsville, and Jasper. We’ll confirm the pickup details ahead of time so you aren’t left guessing when the day is over.
7. Pre-arrange your pickup before you lose cell service
Orchard areas can have spotty cell service. Once you’re busy picking apples, shopping, eating, and keeping track of the kids, it’s easy to forget about transportation until the last minute.
A pre-arranged pickup keeps things simple.
Before you head out, confirm:
Your pickup location
Your preferred pickup time
The number of passengers
Whether you have children’s car seats or extra bags
Any additional stops you’d like to make
If your plans change, let us know as soon as you can. We’ll do our best to work with you.
8. Plan for apples, coolers, strollers, and family gear
An orchard trip rarely ends with just one small bag of apples.
You may also have:
Apple cider
Fried pies
Jams and preserves
Pumpkins
Coolers
Strollers
Picnic supplies
Shopping bags and fall decorations
Our clean Jeep Compass has room for a normal family load, and the Forluck roof cargo basket provides additional space for suitable travel gear. When you book, tell us what you’re bringing so we can plan the ride properly.
That’s especially helpful for families traveling from a cabin. You don’t want to discover at the end of the day that your group and your apple haul don’t fit comfortably.
9. Families can request car seats
Traveling with young children? Northern Star Taxi offers family rides with professionally installed infant, toddler, and booster car seats available by request.
Please mention the children’s ages and sizes when you book. That gives us time to prepare the right setup.
A family ride can be helpful when you’re staying in a vacation rental without the right car seats, flying into the area, or visiting from out of town. You can learn more about family rides and car seat availability here.
A little advance notice goes a long way during busy fall weekends.

10. Choose your travel day based on the experience you want
There’s no wrong way to enjoy apple season, but different days offer different experiences.
Choose an early September weekday if you want:
Less traffic
Shorter lines
A quieter orchard visit
An easier day with small children
More flexibility for local errands or lunch
Choose a festival weekend if you want:
Live music
Craft vendors
Fair food
Demonstrations
Large crowds and a full fall event atmosphere
If you’re visiting during the festival, arriving early is smart. If you’re staying in the area between the two festival weekends, October 12–16 may offer a calmer way to enjoy Ellijay.
And if you’re coming from Blue Ridge, remember that a taxi service in Blue Ridge, GA can help with more than airport transfers. Northern Star Taxi can provide cabin transportation, local rides, and pre-arranged trips into Ellijay for orchard visits or festival days.
